Dans son exposé instructif sur l’esclavage barbaresque, Robert C. Davis remarque que les historiens américains ont étudié tous les aspects de l’esclavage des Africains par les Blancs mais ont largement ignoré l’esclavage des Blancs par les Nord-Africains. Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters [Esclaves chrétiens, maîtres musulmans] est un récit soigneusement documenté et clairement écrit de ce que le Prof. Davis nomme «l’autre esclavage», qui s’épanouit durant approximativement la même période que le trafic transatlantique, et qui dévasta des centaines de communautés côtières européennes. Dans la pensée des Blancs d’aujourd’hui, l’esclavage ne joue pas du tout le rôle central qu’il joue chez les Noirs, mais pas parce qu’il fut un problème de courte durée ou sans importance. L’histoire de l’esclavage méditerranéen est, en fait, aussi sombre que les descriptions les plus tendancieuses de l’esclavage américain. Le Prof. Davis, qui enseigne l’histoire sociale italienne à l’Université d’Etat de l’Ohio, projette une lumière perçante sur ce coin fascinant mais négligé de l’histoire.
Un commerce en gros
La côte barbaresque, qui s’étend du Maroc à la Libye moderne, fut le foyer d’une industrie florissante de rapt d’êtres humains depuis 1500 jusqu’à 1800 environ. Les grandes capitales esclavagistes étaient Salé au Maroc, Tunis, Alger et Tripoli, et pendant la plus grande partie de cette période les marines européennes étaient trop faibles pour opposer plus qu’une résistance symbolique.
Le trafic transatlantique des Noirs était strictement commercial, mais pour les Arabes, les souvenirs des Croisades et la fureur d’avoir été expulsés d’Espagne en 1492 semblent avoir motivé une campagne de rapt de chrétiens, ressemblant presque à un djihad. «Ce fut peut-être cet aiguillon de la vengeance, opposé aux marchandages affables de la place du marché, qui rendit les esclavagistes islamiques tellement plus agressifs et initialement (pourrait-on dire) plus prospères dans leur travail que leurs homologues chrétiens», écrit le Prof. Davis. Pendant les XVIe et XVIIe siècles, plus d’esclaves furent emmenés vers le sud à travers la Méditerranée que vers l’ouest à travers l’Atlantique. Certains furent rendus à leurs familles contre une rançon, certains furent utilisés pour le travail forcé en Afrique du Nord, et les moins chanceux moururent à la tâche comme esclaves sur les galères.
Ce qui est le plus frappant concernant les raids esclavagistes barbaresques est leur ampleur et leur portée. Les pirates kidnappaient la plupart de leurs esclaves en interceptant des bateaux, mais ils organisaient aussi d’énormes assauts amphibies qui dépeuplèrent pratiquement des parties de la côte italienne. L’Italie était la cible la plus appréciée, en partie parce que la Sicile n’est qu’à 200 km de Tunis, mais aussi parce qu’elle n’avait pas de gouvernement central fort qui aurait pu résister à l’invasion.
De grands raids ne rencontraient souvent aucune résistance. Quand les pirates mirent à sac Vieste dans le sud de l’Italie en 1554, par exemple, ils enlevèrent un total stupéfiant de 6.000 captifs. Les Algériens enlevèrent 7.000 esclaves dans la baie de Naples en 1544, un raid qui fit tellement chuter le prix des esclaves qu’on disait pouvoir «troquer un chrétien pour un oignon». L’Espagne aussi subit des attaques de grande ampleur. Après un raid sur Grenade en 1556 qui rapporta 4.000 hommes, femmes et enfants, on disait qu’il «pleuvait des chrétiens sur Alger». Pour chaque grand raid de ce genre, il a dû y en avoir des douzaines de plus petits.
L’apparition d’une grande flotte pouvait faire fuir toute la population à l’intérieur des terres, vidant les régions côtières. En 1566, un groupe de 6.000 Turcs et corsaires traversa l’Adriatique et débarqua à Fracaville. Les autorités ne purent rien faire, et recommandèrent l’évacuation complète, laissant aux Turcs le contrôle de plus de 1300 kilomètres carrés de villages abandonnés jusqu’à Serracapriola.
Quand les pirates apparaissaient, les gens fuyaient souvent la côte pour aller dans la ville la plus proche, mais le Prof. Davis explique que ce n’était pas toujours une bonne stratégie: «Plus d’une ville de taille moyenne, bondée de réfugiés, fut incapable de soutenir un assaut frontal par plusieurs centaines de corsaires, et le reis [capitaine des corsaires] qui aurait dû autrement chercher les esclaves par quelques douzaines à la fois le long des plages et dans les collines, pouvait trouver un millier ou plus de captifs opportunément rassemblés en un seul endroit pour être pris.»
Les pirates revenaient encore et encore pour piller le même territoire. En plus d’un bien plus grand nombre de petits raids, la côte calabraise subit les déprédations suivantes, de plus en plus graves, en moins de dix ans: 700 personnes capturées en un seul raid en 1636, un millier en 1639 et 4.000 en 1644. Durant les XVIe et XVIIe siècles, les pirates installèrent des bases semi-permanentes sur les îles d’Ischia et de Procida, presque dans l’embouchure de la baie de Naples, d’où ils faisaient leur choix de trafic commercial.
Quand ils débarquaient sur le rivage, les corsaires musulmans ne manquaient pas de profaner les églises. Ils dérobaient souvent les cloches, pas seulement parce que le métal avait de la valeur mais aussi pour réduire au silence la voix distinctive du christianisme.
Dans les petits raids plus fréquents, un petit nombre de bateaux opéraient furtivement, tombant sur les établissements côtiers au milieu de la nuit de manière à attraper les gens «paisibles et encore nus dans leur lit». Cette pratique donna naissance à l’expression sicilienne moderne, pigliato dai turchi, «pris par les Turcs», ce qui veut dire être attrapé par surprise en étant endormi ou affolé.
La prédation constante faisait un terrible nombre de victimes. Les femmes étaient plus faciles à attraper que les hommes, et les régions côtières pouvaient rapidement perdre toutes leurs femmes en âge d’avoir des enfants. Les pêcheurs avaient peur de sortir, ou ne prenaient la mer qu’en convois. Finalement, les Italiens abandonnèrent une grande partie de leurs côtes. Comme l’explique le Prof. Davis, à la fin du XVIIe siècle «la péninsule italienne avait alors été la proie des corsaires barbaresques depuis deux siècles ou plus, et ses populations côtières s’étaient alors en grande partie retirées dans des villages fortifiés sur des collines ou dans des villes plus grandes comme Rimini, abandonnant des kilomètres de rivages autrefois peuplés aux vagabonds et aux flibustiers».
C’est seulement vers 1700 que les Italiens purent empêcher les raids terrestres spectaculaires, bien que la piraterie sur les mers continua sans obstacles. Le Prof. Davis pense que la piraterie conduisit l’Espagne et surtout l’Italie à se détourner de la mer et à perdre leurs traditions de commerce et de navigation, avec des effets dévastateurs: «Du moins pour l’Ibérie et l’Italie, le XVIIe siècle représenta une période sombre dont les sociétés espagnole et italienne émergèrent comme de simples ombres de ce qu’elles avaient été durant les époques dorées antérieures.»
Certains pirates arabes étaient d’habiles navigateurs de haute mer, et terrorisèrent les chrétiens jusqu’à une distance de 1600 km. Un raid spectaculaire jusqu’en Islande en 1627 rapporta près de 400 captifs. Nous pensons que l’Angleterre était une redoutable puissance maritime dès l’époque de Francis Drake, mais pendant tout le XVIIe siècle, les pirates arabes opérèrent librement dans les eaux britanniques, pénétrant même dans l’estuaire de la Tamise pour faire des prises et des raids sur les villes côtières. En seulement trois ans, de 1606 à 1609, la marine britannique reconnut avoir perdu pas moins de 466 navires marchands britanniques et écossais du fait des corsaires algériens. Au milieu des années 1600, les Britanniques se livraient à un actif trafic transatlantique de Noirs, mais beaucoup des équipages britanniques eux-mêmes devenaient la propriété des pirates arabes.
La vie sous le fouet
Les attaques terrestres pouvaient être très fructueuses, mais elles étaient plus risquées que les prises en mer. Les navires étaient par conséquent la principale source d’esclaves blancs. A la différence de leurs victimes, les navires corsaires avaient deux moyens de propulsion: les esclaves des galères en plus des voiles. Cela signifiait qu’ils pouvaient avancer à la rame vers un bateau encalminé et l’attaquer quand ils le voulaient. Ils portaient de nombreux drapeaux différents, donc quand ils naviguaient ils pouvaient arborer le pavillon qui avait le plus de chances de tromper une proie.
Un navire marchand de bonne taille pouvait porter environ 20 marins en assez bonne santé pour durer quelques années dans les galères, et les passagers étaient habituellement bons pour en tirer une rançon. Les nobles et les riches marchands étaient des prises attractives, de même que les Juifs, qui pouvaient généralement rapporter une forte rançon de la part de leurs coreligionnaires. Les hauts dignitaires du clergé étaient aussi précieux parce que le Vatican payait habituellement n’importe quel prix pour les tirer des mains des infidèles.
A l’approche des pirates, les passagers enlevaient souvent leurs beaux vêtements et tentaient de s’habiller aussi pauvrement que possible, dans l’espoir que leurs ravisseurs les rendraient à leur famille contre une rançon modeste. Cet effort était inutile si les pirates torturaient le capitaine pour avoir des informations sur les passagers. Il était aussi courant de faire déshabiller les hommes, à la fois pour rechercher des objets de valeur cousus dans leurs vêtements et pour voir si des Juifs circoncis ne s’étaient pas déguisés en chrétiens.
Si les pirates étaient à court d’esclaves pour les galères, ils pouvaient mettre certains de leurs captifs au travail immédiatement, mais les prisonniers étaient généralement mis dans la cale pour le voyage de retour. Ils étaient entassés, pouvant à peine bouger dans la saleté, la puanteur et la vermine, et beaucoup mouraient avant d’atteindre le port.
Dès l’arrivée en Afrique du Nord, c’était la tradition de faire défiler les chrétiens récemment capturés dans les rues, pour que les gens puissent se moquer d’eux et que les enfants puissent les couvrir d’ordures. Au marché aux esclaves, les hommes étaient obligés de sautiller pour prouver qu’ils n’étaient pas boiteux, et les acheteurs voulaient souvent les faire mettre nus pour voir s’ils étaient en bonne santé. Cela permettait aussi d’évaluer la valeur sexuelle des hommes comme des femmes; les concubines blanches avaient une valeur élevée, et toutes les capitales esclavagistes avaient un réseau homosexuel florissant. Les acheteurs qui espéraient faire un profit rapide avec une forte rançon examinaient les lobes d’oreilles pour repérer des marques de piercing, ce qui était une indication de richesse. Il était aussi habituel de regarder les dents d’un captif pour voir s’il pourrait survivre à un dur régime d’esclave.
Le pacha ou souverain de la région recevait un certain pourcentage d’esclaves comme une forme d’impôt sur le revenu. Ceux-ci étaient presque toujours des hommes, et devenaient propriété du gouvernement plutôt que propriété privée. A la différence des esclaves privés, qui embarquaient habituellement avec leur maître, ils vivaient dans les bagnos ou «bains», ainsi que les magasins d’esclaves du pacha étaient appelés. Il était habituel de raser la tête et la barbe des esclaves publics comme une humiliation supplémentaire, dans une période où la tête et la pilosité faciale étaient une part importante de l’identité masculine.
La plupart de ces esclaves publics passaient le reste de leur vie comme esclaves sur les galères, et il est difficile d’imaginer une existence plus misérable. Les hommes étaient enchaînés trois, quatre ou cinq par aviron, leurs chevilles enchaînées ensemble aussi. Les rameurs ne quittaient jamais leur rame, et quand on les laissait dormir, ils dormaient sur leur banc. Les esclaves pouvaient se pousser les uns les autres pour se soulager dans une ouverture de la coque, mais ils étaient souvent trop épuisés ou découragés pour bouger, et se souillaient là où ils étaient assis. Ils n’avaient aucune protection contre le brûlant soleil méditerranéen, et leur maître écorchait leur dos déjà à vif avec l’instrument d’encouragement favori du conducteur d’esclaves, un pénis de bouf allongé ou «nerf de bouf». Il n’y avait presque aucun espoir d’évasion ou de secours; le travail d’un esclave de galère était de se tuer à la tâche — principalement dans des raids pour capturer encore plus de malheureux comme lui — et son maître le jetait par-dessus bord au premier signe de maladie grave.
Quand la flotte pirate était au port, les esclaves de galères vivaient dans le bagno et faisaient tout le travail sale, dangereux ou épuisant que le pacha leur ordonnait de faire. C’était habituellement tailler et traîner des pierres, draguer le port, ou les ouvrages pénibles. Les esclaves se trouvant dans la flotte du Sultan turc n’avaient même pas ce choix. Ils étaient souvent en mer pendant des mois d’affilée, et restaient enchaînés à leurs rames même au port. Leurs bateaux étaient des prisons à vie.
D’autres esclaves sur la côte barbaresque avaient des travaux plus variés. Souvent ils faisaient du travail de propriétaire ou agricole du genre que nous associons à l’esclavage en Amérique, mais ceux qui avaient des compétences étaient souvent loués par leurs propriétaire. Certains maîtres relâchaient simplement leurs esclaves pendant la journée avec l’ordre de revenir avec une certaine quantité d’argent le soir sous peine d’être sévèrement battus. Les maîtres semblaient attendre un bénéfice d’environ 20% sur le prix d’achat. Quoi qu’ils faisaient, à Tunis et à Tripoli, les esclaves portaient habituellement un anneau de fer autour d’une cheville, et étaient chargés d’une chaîne pesant 11 ou 14 kg.
Certains maîtres mettaient leurs esclaves blancs au travail dans des fermes loin à l’intérieur des terres, où ils affrontaient encore un autre péril: la capture et un nouvel esclavage par des raids de Berbères. Ces infortunés ne verraient probablement plus jamais un autre Européen pendant le reste de leur courte vie.
Le Prof. Davis remarque qu’il n’y avait aucun obstacle à la cruauté: «Il n’y avait pas de force équivalente pour protéger l’esclave de la violence de son maître: pas de lois locales contre la cruauté, pas d’opinion publique bienveillante, et rarement de pression efficace de la part des Etats étrangers». Les esclaves n’étaient pas seulement des marchandises, ils étaient des infidèles, et méritaient toutes les souffrances qu’un maître leur infligeait.
Le Prof. Davis note que «tous les esclaves qui vécurent dans les bagnos et qui survécurent pour écrire leurs expériences soulignèrent la cruauté et la violence endémiques pratiquées ici». La punition favorite était la bastonnade, par lequel un homme était mis sur le dos et ses chevilles attachées et suspendu par la taille pour être battu longuement sur la plante des pieds. Un esclave pouvait recevoir jusqu’à 150 ou 200 coups, qui pouvaient le laisser estropié. La violence systématique transformait beaucoup d’hommes en automates. Les esclaves chrétiens étaient souvent si abondants et si bon marché qu’il n’y avait aucun intérêt à s’en occuper; beaucoup de propriétaires les faisaient travailler jusqu’à la mort et achetaient des remplaçants.
Le système d’esclavage n’était cependant pas entièrement sans humanité. Les esclaves recevaient habituellement congé le vendredi. De même, quand les hommes du bagno étaient au port, ils avaient une heure ou deux de temps libre chaque jour entre la fin du travail et avant que les portes du bagno ne soient fermées pour la nuit. Durant ce temps, les esclaves pouvaient travailler pour une paie, mais ils ne pouvaient pas garder tout l’argent qu’ils gagnaient. Même les esclaves du bagno étaient taxés d’une somme pour leurs logements sales et leur nourriture rance.
Les esclaves publics contribuaient aussi à un fonds pour entretenir les prêtres du bagno. C’était une époque très religieuse, et même dans les plus horribles conditions, les hommes voulaient avoir une chance de se confesser et — plus important — de recevoir l’extrême-onction. Il y avait presque toujours un prêtre captif ou deux dans le bagno, mais pour qu’il reste disponible pour ses devoirs religieux, les autres esclaves devaient contribuer et racheter son temps au pacha. Certains esclaves de galères n’avaient donc plus rien pour acheter de la nourriture ou des vêtements, bien que durant certaines périodes des Européens libres vivant dans les villes barbaresques contribuaient aux frais d’entretien des prêtres des bagnos.
Pour quelques-uns, l’esclavage devenait plus que supportable. Certains métiers — en particulier celui de constructeur de navire — étaient si recherchés qu’un propriétaire pouvait récompenser son esclave avec une villa privée et des maîtresses. Même quelques résidents du bagno réussirent à exploiter l’hypocrisie de la société islamique et à améliorer leur condition. La loi interdisait strictement aux musulmans de faire le commerce de l’alcool, mais était plus indulgente avec les musulmans qui le consommaient seulement. Des esclaves entreprenants établirent des tavernes dans les bagnos et certains eurent la belle vie en servant les buveurs musulmans.
Une manière d’alléger le poids de l’esclavage était de «prendre le turban» et de se convertir à l’islam. Cela exemptait un homme du service dans les galères, des ouvrages pénibles, et de quelques autres brimades indignes d’un fils du Prophète, mais ne le faisait pas sortir de la condition d’esclave. L’un des travaux des prêtres des bagnos était d’empêcher les hommes désespérés de se convertir, mais la plupart des esclaves semblent ne pas avoir eu besoin de conseil religieux. Les chrétiens pensaient que la conversion mettrait leur âme en danger, et elle signifiait aussi le déplaisant rituel de la circoncision adulte. Beaucoup d’esclaves semblent avoir enduré les horreurs de l’esclavage en les considérants comme une punition pour leurs péchés et comme une épreuve pour leur foi. Les maîtres décourageaient les conversions parce qu’elles limitaient le recours aux mauvais traitements et abaissaient la valeur de revente d’un esclave.
Rançon et rachat
Pour les esclaves, l’évasion était impossible. Ils étaient trop loin de chez eux, étaient souvent enchaînés, et pouvaient être immédiatement identifiés par leurs traits européens. Le seul espoir était la rançon.
Parfois, la chance venait rapidement. Si un groupe de pirates avait déjà capturé tant d’hommes qu’il n’avait plus assez d’espace sous le pont, il pouvait faire un raid sur une ville et ensuite revenir quelques jours plus tard pour revendre les captifs à leurs familles. C’était généralement à un prix bien plus faible que celui du rançonnement de quelqu’un à partir de l’Afrique du Nord, mais c’était encore bien plus que des paysans pouvaient se le permettre. Les fermiers n’avaient généralement pas d’argent liquide, et pas de biens à part la maison et la terre. Un marchand était généralement prêt à les acquérir pour un prix modique, mais cela signifiait qu’un captif revenait dans une famille qui était complètement ruinée.
La plupart des esclaves ne rachetaient leur retour qu’après être passés par l’épreuve du passage en pays barbaresque et de la vente à un spéculateur. Les riches captifs pouvaient généralement trouver une rançon suffisante, mais la plupart des esclaves ne le pouvaient pas. Les paysans illettrés ne pouvaient pas écrire à la maison et même s’ils le faisaient, il n’y avait pas d’argent pour une rançon.
La majorité des esclaves dépendait donc de l’œuvre charitable des Trinitaires (fondé en Italie en 1193) et de celle des Mercedariens (fondé en Espagne en 1203). Ceux-ci étaient des ordres religieux établis pour libérer les Croisés détenus par les musulmans, mais ils transférèrent bientôt leur œuvre au rachat des esclaves détenus par les Barbaresques, collectant de l’argent spécifiquement dans ce but. Souvent ils plaçaient des boîtes à serrure devant les églises avec l’inscription «Pour la récupération des pauvres esclaves», et le clergé appelait les riches chrétiens à laisser de l’argent dans leurs vœux de rédemption. Les deux ordres devinrent des négociateurs habiles, et réussissaient habituellement à racheter les esclaves à des meilleurs prix que ceux obtenus par des libérateurs inexpérimentés. Cependant, il n’y avait jamais assez d’argent pour libérer beaucoup de captifs, et le Prof. Davis estime que pas plus de 3 ou 4% des esclaves étaient rançonnés en une seule année. Cela signifie que la plupart laissèrent leurs os dans les tombes chrétiennes sans marque en-dehors des murs des villes.
Les ordres religieux conservaient des comptes précis de leurs succès. Les Trinitaires espagnols, par exemple, menèrent 72 expéditions de rachats dans les années 1600, comptant en moyenne 220 libérations chacune. Il était habituel de ramener les esclaves libérés chez eux et de les faire marcher dans les rues des villes dans de grandes célébrations. Ces défilés devinrent l’un des spectacles urbains les plus caractéristiques de l’époque, et avaient une forte orientation religieuse. Parfois les esclaves marchaient dans leurs vieux haillons d’esclaves pour souligner les tourments qu’ils avaient subis; parfois ils portaient des costumes blancs spéciaux pour symboliser la renaissance. D’après les archives de l’époque, beaucoup d’esclaves libérés ne se rétablissaient jamais complètement après leurs épreuves, particulièrement s’ils avaient passé beaucoup d’années en captivité.
Combien d’esclaves ?
Le Prof. Davis remarque que des recherches énormes ont été faites pour évaluer aussi exactement que possible le nombre de Noirs emmenés à travers l’Atlantique, mais qu’il n’y a pas eu d’effort semblable pour connaître l’ampleur de l’esclavage en Méditerranée. Il n’est pas facile d’obtenir un compte fiable — les Arabes eux-mêmes ne conservaient généralement pas d’archives — mais au cours de dix années de recherches le Prof. Davis a développé une méthode d’estimation.
Par exemple, les archives suggèrent que de 1580 à 1680 il y a eu une moyenne de quelques 35.000 esclaves en pays barbaresque. Il y avait une perte régulière du fait des morts et des rachats, donc si la population restait constante, le taux de capture de nouveaux esclaves par les pirates devait égaler le taux d’usure. Il y a de bonnes bases pour estimer les taux de décès. Par exemple, on sait que sur les près de 400 Islandais capturés en 1627, il ne restait que 70 survivants huit ans plus tard. En plus de la malnutrition, de la surpopulation, de l’excès de travail et des punitions brutales, les esclaves subissaient des épidémies de peste, qui éliminaient généralement 20 ou 30% des esclaves blancs.
Par un certain nombre de sources, le Prof. Davis estime donc que le taux de décès était d’environ 20% par an. Les esclaves n’avaient pas accès aux femmes, donc le remplacement se faisait exclusivement par des captures. Sa conclusion: «Entre 1530 et 1780, il y eut presque certainement un million et peut-être bien jusqu’à un million et un quart de chrétiens européens blancs asservis par les musulmans de la côte barbaresque». Cela dépasse considérablement le chiffre généralement accepté de 800.000 Africains transportés dans les colonies d’Amérique du Nord et, plus tard, dans les Etats-Unis.
Les puissances européennes furent incapables de mettre fin à ce trafic. Le Prof. Davis explique qu’à la fin des années 1700, elles contrôlaient mieux ce commerce, mais qu’il y eut une reprise de l’esclavage des Blancs pendant le chaos des guerres napoléoniennes.
La navigation américaine ne fut pas exempte non plus de la prédation. C’est seulement en 1815, après deux guerres contre eux, que les marins américains furent débarrassés des pirates barbaresques. Ces guerres furent des opérations importantes pour la jeune république; une campagne est rappelée par les paroles «vers les rivages de Tripoli» dans l’hymne de la marine. Quand les Français prirent Alger en 1830, il y avait encore 120 esclaves blancs dans le bagno.
Pourquoi y a-t-il si peu d’intérêt pour l’esclavage en Méditerranée alors que l’érudition et la réflexion sur l’esclavage des Noirs ne finit jamais? Comme l’explique le Prof. Davis, des esclaves blancs avec des maîtres non-blancs ne cadrent simplement pas avec «le récit maître de l’impérialisme européen». Les schémas de victimisation si chers aux intellectuels requièrent de la méchanceté blanche, pas des souffrances blanches.
Le Prof. Davis remarque aussi que l’expérience européenne de l’asservissement à grande échelle fait apparaître le mensonge d’un autre thème gauchiste favori: que l’esclavage des Noirs aurait été un pas crucial dans l’établissement des concepts européens de race et de hiérarchie raciale. Ce n’est pas le cas; pendant des siècles, les Européens vécurent eux-mêmes dans la peur du fouet, et un grand nombre assista aux défilés de rachat des esclaves libérés, qui étaient tous blancs. L’esclavage était un sort plus facilement imaginable pour eux-mêmes que pour les lointains Africains.
Avec un peu d’efforts, il est possible d’imaginer les Européens se préoccupant de l’esclavage autant que les Noirs. Si les Européens nourrissaient des griefs concernant les esclaves des galères de la même manière que les Noirs font pour les travailleurs des champs, la politique européenne serait certainement différente. Il n’y aurait pas d’excuses rampantes pour les Croisades, peu d’immigration musulmane en Europe, les minarets ne pousseraient pas dans toute l’Europe, et la Turquie ne rêverait pas de rejoindre l’Union Européenne. Le passé ne peut pas être changé, et les regrets peuvent être pris à l’excès, mais ceux qui oublient paient aussi un prix élevé.

En 323 avant l'ère chrétienne, le 13 juin, meurt à Babylone Alexandre, roi de Macédoine, que la postérité surnomma Alexandre le Grand. Il n'avait pas encore 33 ans. Cette disparition marque l'écroulement d'un rêve grandiose mais utopique car faisant fi de cette réalité incontournable qui s'appelle l'identité des peuples.
Fils du roi de Macédoine Philippe II, qui avait réussi à imposer aux cités de Grèce sa lourde autorité, Alexandre eut pour précepteur Aristote. Il révéla vite ses qualités de chef de guerre (lors de la bataille victorieuse de Chéronée, son père lui confia le commandement de la cavalerie). Philippe, assassiné en 336, Alexandre recueillit un héritage lourd à porter pour des épaules de vingt ans. À Athènes, Démosthène le considérait comme un gamin inoffensif. Il dut vite déchanter. Car les cités grecques, poussées par les Perses, ayant cru venu le moment de la révolte, Alexandre les remit à l'obéissance en frappant dur : Thèbes fut détruite, après que sa population eût subi un véritable carnage. Mais il se montra diplomate en pardonnant à Athènes. Quant aux peuples trop turbulents voisins de la Macédoine, comme les Thraces au nord, ils furent sévèrement corrigés, Alexandre assurant en moins d'un an la suprématie macédonienne sur la péninsule balkanique.
Il disposait d'une force militaire de grande qualité, le noyau dur de l'armée macédonienne étant la phalange, dont les membres constituaient un compagnonnage guerrier gage de solidité et d'efficacité. Mais Alexandre sut tirer profit des ressources en hommes fournies, bon gré mal gré, par les peuples soumis (Thraces et Thessaliens étaient d'excellents cavaliers). C'est donc à la tête d'une trentaine de milliers de combattants qu'il franchit l'Hellespont pour s'attaquer à l'empire perse. Lequel était censé pouvoir aligner plus d'un million de soldats...
Il en fallait plus pour faire hésiter Alexandre. Il entreprit une longue marche à travers l'Asie Mineure, après avoir offert des sacrifices à Athéna en un lieu hautement symbolique, Troie. Soumettant les cités rencontrées les unes après les autres, il semblait jouir d'une protection divine et la tradition, affirmant qu'il avait su trancher d'un coup d'épée l'inextricable nœud gordien, y voyait la promesse d'une maitrise du monde. Quand Darius, « le grand roi » des Perses, fort de son immense armée, voulut barrer la route à Alexandre, celui-ci sut insuffler à ses hommes une détermination qui impressionna tant son adversaire qu'il préféra tourner casaque, laissant au vainqueur son immense trésor et son harem. Darius voulut négocier, offrant à son vainqueur une impressionnante rançon et la moitié de son empire Jusqu’à l’Euphrate. Alexandre lui répondit avec hauteur : « Je suis le maître de l'Asie », Puis entreprit la conquête de la Syrie. Tyr et Gaza, qui avaient osé résister, virent leurs habitants massacrés ou vendus comme esclaves.
Poursuivant vers le sud, Alexandre pénétra en Egypte. Tandis que sa flotte remontait le Nil, il alla s'emparer de l'énorme trésor de Memphis. Affichant un grand respect pour les dieux égyptiens, faisant rebâtir des sanctuaires ruinés, il s'assit sur le trône ancestral des pharaons. S'affirmant fils de Zeus-Amon, il ordonna la construction d'une grande cité devant porter son nom, Alexandrie. Puis il repartit en direction du cœur de l'empire perse et, après avoir franchi le Tigre, fit un grand massacre de la dernière armée qu'essaya de lui opposer Darius. Celui-ci finit misérablement, sous les coups d'assassins. Alexandre lui fît faire des obsèques grandioses.
Puis il poursuivit sa marche vers l'Est, jusqu'à l'Indus. Mais ses vieux compagnons commençaient à rechigner. Leur déplaisait cette orientalisation de la cour d'Alexandre, qui incitait ses généraux à prendre, comme il le faisait lui-même, des compagnes asiatiques, tandis qu'il confiait de hautes responsabilités, y compris militaires, à d'anciens adversaires, ce que les vétérans grecs acceptaient fort mal.
Quand Alexandre mourut à Babylone, à la veille de partir conquérir l'Arabie, l'empire cosmopolite qu'il avait voulu édifier, au mépris des réalités ethniques, s'écroula comme un château de cartes.
Depuis la fin du confinement, Génération identitaire mène des "opérations de sécurisation dans les transports" à Lyon. Ce jeudi, un collectif de juristes ont décidé de lancer une pétition.
"Ce type d’actions, venant d’une milice privée autoproclamée, constitue un danger pour les citoyens et la démocratie", commentent les juristes dans un communiqué. "De tels groupements n’ont pas à s’attribuer les missions et prérogatives d’intérêt général relevant de professions, de missions et de fonctions règlementée", poursuit le collectif.
"Face à la recrudescence d’opérations de sécurisation des rues et des transports à Lyon menées par des groupes d’individus", le collectif Défense et Égalité appelle le Préfet et Gérard Collomb à réagir à la formation de ces "milices privées" dans les "meilleurs délais pour mettre fin à ces agissements".
Ce collectif est composé d'Albert Levy, ancien magistrat, Arié Alimi, avocat, Sofia Soula-Michal, Avocat, Zerrin Bataray, Avocat, Amna Ouerhani, Avocat, Abdelrahim Abboub, Avocat, composant le Collectif Défense et Egalite.
Ce jeudi matin, la pétition comptait presque 500 signatures.
— Elles étaient épatantes, vos nouvelles », dit Henri Béraud.
Je rougis jusqu'aux oreilles et bredouillai qu'il était trop indulgent. J'avais vingt-cinq ans. J'étais un concentré de timidité bretonne, et peu entraîné aux compliments. Dans ma famille, ils étaient aussi rares que l'argent de poche. Il aurait fallu être Balzac en culottes courtes pour arracher mon père à son journal. Et encore n'aurait-il pu s'empêcher de critiquer la longueur des descriptions et l'usage de l'écriture phonétique dans les discours du baron de Nucingen.
— Epatantes, répéta Béraud. Vous m'avez beaucoup amusé. Je vous en remercie. C'est tellement rare. »
C'était trop. Je fondais. Je défaillais. Je gonflais du cou comme un rouge-gorge. On m'aurait annoncé ma libération immédiate que je n'eus pas éprouvé ce plaisir capiteux. Car nous étions en prison.
Je ne devrais peut-être pas l'avouer, malgré la prescription. Ça jette toujours un froid, je l'ai remarqué. Quand je dis : « Ma cellule faisait face à celle de Laval. Je le voyais, le matin, les chaînes aux pieds, vêtu de bure, il ressemblait à un parachutiste auvergnat », il y a toujours un silence, un moment de gêne.
Trente-cinq ans après, ma mémoire, si capricieuse et fantasque, n'a rien oublié de ces jours. Ni un bruit, ni une odeur, ni un détail.
En apprenant que le «Prix des Intellectuels Indépendants » était allé à M. Jean Butin pour son livre sur Béraud, tout a resurgi, luisant, précis, net comme un sous-marin qui émerge.
J'ai revu cet après-midi d'octobre 44. Le soleil, encore haut derrière la verrière d'ouest, étale sa lumière sur le ciment de la 1re division de Fresnes : je suis avec Robert Brasillach, entre les rails où roulent les chariots du pénitencier, dans une file de taulards qui espère la distribution de je ne sais quels colis.
Il m'a présenté à deux messieurs. Un vieux jeune homme en veste de tweed, milord dandy, fringant, nerveux, sautillant, avec un nez en trompette, un fume-cigarette et un nœud papillon à pois : Georges Suarez.
Dans quelques jours il ouvrira au fort de Montrouge le long cortège des fusillés de la Libération. Mais pour l'instant le destin paraît attendre, immobile. Rien ne semble encore écrit. Suarez ne sait pas que le piège s'est déjà refermé sur lui.
Au printemps, il était en reportage à Lisbonne, ville admirable, et doublement, car Salazar l'avait maintenue aux frontières de la guerre. Le regard brillant, les mains lestes, Suarez raconte son voyage dans le temps. Un passeport pour la paix, et voici les magasins de l'abondance, comme autrefois, offrant en vente libre, sans ticket, des étoffes, des cuirs, des bijoux, les victuailles les plus recherchées, les joyaux d'un trésor qui a disparu dans les fumées de la débâcle et le naufrage de notre jeunesse.
A deux jours de train, ça existe encore, la nuit sans alerte, la nuit scintillante, palpitante de tous ses feux, parée de toutes ses lumières, allumée comme pour une fête, et qui ignore le lourd grondement des «forteresses » volant dans les ténèbres. Suarez a pourtant quitté ce paradis aux couleurs du passé. Par coquetterie, insouciance, panache, il est revenu. Malgré les conseils de ses proches, il n'a pas supporté que l'orage se passât sans lui. « Je n'ai pas quitté mon pays en 40. Pourquoi le quitterais-je en 44? »
Au reste, que risque-t-il? On lui doit le meilleur ouvrage paru sur Clemenceau ; une colossale vie de Briand en six volumes, une douzaine de livres d'analyses, de réflexions, de portraits, dont quelques-uns en collaboration avec son ami fraternel, Joseph Kessel, qui doit être à Londres. Que peut-on lui reprocher?
Il a bien dirigé pendant deux ans un quotidien collaborationniste : «Aujourd'hui». Et après? Au pire, cela mérite un blâme. Et seulement si les juges sont partisans. La preuve qu'il n'y a rien contre lui, c'est que son instruction a été expédiée en deux heures.
Etrange aveuglement chez un observateur aussi subtil de la politique française, de ses traîtrises et de ses fureurs. Trois semaines plus tard, douze fusils, tirant en salve, allaient balayer ses illusions.
Le second personnage est tout différent. Il est massif et lourd, tassé, la tête dans les épaules et les poings dans les poches du veston. Dans un visage affaissé et assez mou, le menton demeure puissant. Je suis surtout retenu par les yeux, de beaux yeux sombres, dessinés dans le goût italien, qui vivent et brillent sous d'épaisses paupières.
Quand Brasillach a dit : « Henri Béraud », mon cœur s'est arrêté. On peut difficilement imaginer aujourd’hui ce que ce nom représentait à l'époque. Je cherche, sans trouver à qui le comparer. Béraud, c'était le plus connu des journalistes de son temps, le meilleur reporter au long cours, devant Kessel, déjà cité, Albert Londres, ou Helsey ; celui qui, dès 1924, avait amené la France au pays des Soviets, dont il disait, contre l'opinion répandue : « Si l'on me demandait : — Cela durera-t-il? je dirais : cela durera. »
Béraud, c'était le pamphlétaire et polémiste qui pétrissait le plus vaste public dans le chaudron des années 30. Bernanos lui est supérieur, à mon avis du moins, car je ne mets rien au-dessus de La grande peur des bien-pensants, ce chef-d'œuvre. Mais Bernanos appartient à un monde disparu, dont l'odeur était l'encens, et la fleur, le lys ; l'ancienne France rêvée par Drumont et Péguy, avec ses fileuses et ses lavandières, ses artisans, ses paysans d'angélus, son ciel couleur de tourterelle quand Jeanne apparaît, aux créneaux des remparts rosés d'Orléans, pour y faire flotter ses bannières ; autant de mots de passe qui ne font plus passer grand-monde, de signes de pistes qui ne conduisent que dans les cimetières, autour de tombes désertées.
Béraud est d'une autre paroisse, plus cossue, mieux fréquentée, à la mode des idées nouvelles. Son odeur est celle du pain chaud, sa fleur le coquelicot, piqué dans la moisson. Il se veut républicain d'une République imaginaire, à la Hugo, avec ses braves gens et ses fiers lurons, francs buveurs, têtes chaudes, regards droits, cœurs purs, aussi ardents à la tâche qu'aux jupons, et toujours prêts aux labours du pavé quand le ciel de la Bastille commence à rougeoyer.
Béraud, qui a le verbe haut et sonore, la période éloquente et charnue, exalte le peuple qui en vingt siècles fit la France républicaine.
Plébéien, fier de l'être, Béraud parle d'une France vue du peuple d'autrefois, forte, généreuse, gaillarde dans ses sabots, n'ayant froid ni aux yeux, ni au cœur, et qui se flatte de ne craindre personne, sans cesser pour autant de manifester une méfiance générale et absolue. Elle salue le château, mais se méfie des nobles ; elle fait baptiser le gamin, mais se méfie du « parti prêtre » ; elle crie « Vive l'Armée ! », mais se méfie des militaires ; elle est prête à mourir pour le droit de vote, mais se méfie de ceux qu'elle élit aux Parlements ; elle ne met rien au-dessus du travail, mais se méfie autant des patrons que des syndicalistes de profession ; elle respecte la richesse, et pratique l'épargne en tenant ses écus serrés dans son bas de laine, mais se méfie des riches dont elle aspire à être ; elle chante « L'Internationale », mais se méfie de l'étranger, « celui qui emmène nos filles et emporte notre blé » (c'est Béraud qui l'écrit dans La gerbe d'or, le premier livre de ses souvenirs).
Car il n'est pas que journaliste complet, ce diable d'homme, «flâneur salarié » comme il disait, interviewer écouté des rois, des princes, des révolutionnaires et des chefs de l'entre-deux-guerres, échotier, critique, gazetier à façon, parlant de tout, sans vergogne, avec le même talent, de la verve, du mouvement, des mots chauds ; il n'est pas que l'un des ténors du pamphlet moderne, dont la voix résonne encore aux oreilles de ceux qui lirent Le fusilleur, il est aussi un romancier considérable, dans la veine des grands conteurs français.
Comme cela arrive parfois, le Goncourt lui fut décerné, en 1922, pour son livre le moins réussi, Le martyre de l'obèse, une fantaisie à la fois bâclée et laborieuse. Mais il y a les autres, tous les autres, que j'ai découverts dans la bibliothèque paternelle, sur le rayon peu garni des romans : Le vitriol de lune, Les bois du templier pendu, Les lurons de Sabolas, Ciel de suie, des livres d'histoires écrits au présent sans qu'on cesse jamais de ressentir le frémissement et la magie du passé.
Tel était l'éminent personnage qui me félicitait de deux nouvelles en langue parlée qu'avait publiées «Révolution nationale». La première s'intitulait «Moi-Mézigue de la Mouff». Elle parut le 6 juin 1944.
C'est une date de première ligne, modèle 1515 ou 1789.
J'avais transformé le petit marchand de journaux de la rue des Patriarches en poste d'observation. Dès onze heures la débâcle se dessinait. Rien ne devait plus l'arrêter : pas un n'eut un regard pour le journal ou ils pouvaient lire, dès la première page, mon nom en lettres grosses comme ça. Cet événement, capital pour moi, était submergé par un autre, qui n'était pas sans importance non plus, du côté de Sainte-Mère-Eglise et même ailleurs.
Comme j'avais lu Kipling (« Si tu peux... », etc.) J’acceptai mon infortune avec une dignité si émouvante qu'elle eût mérité la relation d'un témoin. Mais j'étais seul, ce qui valait mieux.
Chez Félix, l'Auverpin, spécialité des vins d'Anjou, je me refis une santé et rafistolai un moral qui partait en breloques sous la façade.
L'Histoire me renvoyait à la case départ. J'avais raté ma vie. C'était ce que je croyais. C'était ce que j'avais cru jusqu'à cette fin d'après-midi, à Fresnes-lès-Rungis.
Et brusquement, là, sous la verrière, Béraud, à moi, il m'avait dit... j'éclatais, et montai quatre à quatre au troisième, où j'occupais la cellule 348 avec un séminariste et Jo, le boucher belge, un catcheur poids mi-lourd, qui faisait de la dépression le mardi, lorsque Mme Jo s'était dispensée de visite. Alors, il tournait comme un ours en cage, de plus en plus vite, tapant de son poing fermé dans sa main gauche ouverte et insultant sa femme en flamand, ponctuant d'énormes « godfordom » des mots que nous ne comprenions pas, le séminariste ni moi, mais que nous devinions néanmoins des plus désobligeants pour Mme Jo, dont la vertu n'était peut-être pas ce qu'un pauvre prisonnier, belge de surcroît, aurait souhaité qu'elle fût.
Le verbe ne le calmant pas, le boucher des Flandres se jetait alors rituellement sur le châlit dont il festonnait les barreaux de fer comme s'ils eussent été de feuillages ou de pampres. Au final des courses, il tombait sur le parquet les membres tordus, convulsionnaire, délirant, la bave aux lèvres, les yeux jouxtés aux falaises du nez dans une loucherie horrible.
Le séminariste et moi n'étions pas aussi dégagés que nous nous appliquions à l'afficher. Je devais me reprendre à plusieurs fois pour arriver au terme du « Plus beau de tous les tangos du monde », un air initiatique que je m'efforçais de siffloter.
Le boucher belge aurait eu largement le temps de nous faire le coup du lapin, suivi de la manchette de la mort, avant que ne se pointe le maton de garde réveillé par nos râles. Je gardais donc, à portée de main, sous la paillasse, une cuillère aiguisée comme un tranche-lard.
Les souvenirs ressemblent à la laine des vieilles chaussettes : une maille se défait, on tire, et ça ne s'arrête plus, ce qui aggrave ma tendance aux parenthèses, digressions et histoires.
Revenons donc à Fresnes, cellule 348, vue imprenable sur la Croix-de-Berny. La fermeture et l’extinction des feux avaient eu lieu depuis longtemps. Je ne dormais pas. Le catcheur ne me gênait pas, qui sur ma droite ronflait avec puissance et conviction, ni le séminariste, au rythme plus imprévu. Réchappais même au manège d'idées pénibles qui d'ordinaire m'entraînait. Je me sentais moins accablé par l'image des miens, sans argent, sans défense, dans la ville.
Presque chaque nuit ramenait le chagrin tenu caché durant le jour. Alors, le sommeil refusait de « prendre », comme on dit d'une sauce qui file. Au dernier moment, je renaissais à la conscience de nos malheurs. J'écoutais la prison, le pas des rondes, le cri d'un homme qu'on emmenait au mitard, le murmure bourdonné des condamnés, et quand montait le bruit clair d'une chaîne sur le ciment, c'est qu'ils avaient voté la mort.
Les heures passaient. Je devenais de pierre, dur et glacé, immobile, et dans le froid qui gagnait, la seule sensation de chaleur était, sous les paupières, celle des larmes retenues.
Ce soir-là, miracle, les ténèbres s'éclairaient. Mon avenir se dessinait, harmonieux et poudré comme un jardin à la française.
Petit Breton sans relations, je n'avais plus de soucis à me faire. Avec des parrains comme Brasillach et Béraud, je n'aurais que l'embarras du choix des éditeurs, exception faite peut-être de Gallimard : « Gide, c'est un Rousseau congelé », avait écrit Béraud dans La croisade des longues figures, son pamphlet anti-NRF. Toutes les portes allaient s'ouvrir. On ne verrait plus que moi chez « Lipp », « Aux Deux Magots ». Bientôt, l'Ouest-Eclair et La dépêche de Brest porteraient mon renom jusqu'à la pointe de la Cornouaille, mon pays bien-aimé.
Au marché, sur le port, le dos au mur abrité du noroît, à «La Taverne», chez Léon, j'entendais déjà le chœur des voix croisées qui disaient :
— Vous avez vu ? C'était sur le journal. Le fils de Manu. Le petit-fils d'Ambroise-le-senneur, celui qui donnait des noms de fleurs à ses bateaux ! Des livres qu'il écrit maintenant, et à Paris en plus !... Sûr, au jour d'aujourd'hui, avec la struction qu'on donne dans les écoles et partout, c'est moins calé qu'autrefois. Mais quand même, faut qu'il en avait là-dedans. A le voir, on n'aurait pas cru, un écervelé que c'était. Il y avait juste le foteballe et les canots qui l'intéressaient. Comme quoi il faut jamais dire, hein !... »
Délicieuse perspective. Pour un Breton, la gloire ne compte qu'au village» Brasillach et Béraud me l'offraient. Il ne restait plus que le plus facile, écrire. Ils feraient le reste, et les mouettes du Porzou iraient dire mon nom aux remparts de la ville.
Sous ma couverture de coton, je rayonnais. J'avais tort. Deux mois plus tard, le 29 décembre 1944, Henri Béraud était condamné à mort. Pourtant, il n'avait jamais été collaborationniste» Le général De Gaulle lui-même en convint (Un autre De Gaulle, par Claude Mauriac).
Henri Béraud fut gracié, puis enterré vivant à la centrale de Poissy, enfin au bagne de l'île de Ré. Auparavant, il avait passé Quinze jours avec la mort, c'est le titre d'un de ses derniers récits, qui commence ainsi :« Ce qui va suivre fut écrit à la prison de Fresnes, le jour de l’An 1945, dans une cellule de condamné à mort... Ma sérénité est profonde, égale à mon innocence... Condamné dans des conditions juridiques sans précédent, je ne proteste ni contre mon sort, ni contre les étrangetés de la procédure. L’Histoire se chargera... Jamais, ni à l’instruction, ni à l’audience, il n'a été posé une seule question sur des faits relatifs à une connivence quelconque, un contact direct, si minime fût-il, avec l’ennemi. Ni le réquisitoire du gouvernement ni les dépositions des témoins n’y firent la moindre allusion... Tous ceux qui me connaissent savent quelle aversion je nourrissais à l’égard de l’occupant. Je ne me suis jamais caché d'être anti-collaborationniste autant que j’étais anglophobe. J’ai montré, prouvé tout cela. En vain. Une délibération de trois minutes a fait litière de mes explications les plus claires. On voulait ma mort. On voulait me déshonorer. Au fond de ma prison, j’élève vers mes confrères le cri suprême d’une conscience révoltée. Libre écrivain, j’ai écrit, selon ma nature, ce que je croyais juste et vrai... Qu’une injustice révolutionnaire me frappe pour avoir combattu ses doctrines, soit ! Ayant lutté seul, la poitrine découverte, je suis vaincu et me tiens prêt à subir les conséquences de ma défaite. Mais vous, écrivains, qui représentez les droits de l’ esprit, admettez-vous que la rancune politique s’exaspère jusqu’à confondre le patriotisme exalté avec la trahison consentie ?... Vous tous qui me connaissez, iriez-vous laisser ternir mon œuvre et mon nom? Ne vous dresserez-vous pas, selon les traditions de notre état, contre une aussi criante injustice?... Amis, je vous confie mon destin, mon honneur et ma mémoire. »
Béraud ne fut pas entendu. Au bagne de l’ile de Ré, il avait le droit d'écrire. Le journaliste Pierre Malo, qui s’y trouvait également, le décrit ainsi : « Je le vois encore, assis à sa table, à l’autre bout delà bibliothèque, attaquant sa tâche nocturne. Rien n'a pu I’arracher à ses chères habitudes d'antan. Dormant une partie du jour, il se met au travail dès que tombe la nuit, à la lueur d’une petite lampe, dont les rayons embrasent le cadre d’argent où sourit le visage de sa femme. Je le vois de dos. Il semble arcbouté contre sa table. On dirait qu’il va la pousser comme on pousse une charrue. Il a le dos du paysan courbé sur la terre nourricière. Massif et puissant, il s'avancera ainsi pas à pas, traçant un sillon après l’autre, jusqu’à l’aube. Béraud, le laboureur du soir, prépare la moisson dans l’ombre » (Pierre Malo : Je sors du bagne).
A quoi il faut ajouter ceci, qui n'est pas sans importance : cette moisson ne mûrira jamais. Jean Butin le révèle dans son livre : « Tout ce papier qu’il noircit, c'est dans la corbeille à cet usage qu'on le retrouve le jour levé. Il peut écrire ; il ne doit rien garder. Le ministre de la Justice, alerté par des ragots de presse, donna l’ordre de s’emparer des manuscrits. Même à terre, cet homme terrible faisait encore peur aux plus puissants... »
Les écrivains français ne bougèrent pas. Au contraire. C’était le temps du CNE (Comité national des écrivains), dont l’organe : Les lettres françaises, appartenait au parti communiste.
Les justiciers du CNE (Georges Duhamel, François Mauriac, Paul Valéry, Alexandre Arnoux, Louis Aragon, Claude Aveline, Julien Benda, Jean Cassou, Claude Morgan, André Malraux, Paul Eluard, Charles Vildrac, et tant d’autres) avaient écrit et publié durant l’Occupation, à Paris, avec I’imprimatur de la « Propagandastajfel ». Certains l’avaient même remerciée, tel François Mauriac, dont la dédicace fameuse au lieutenant Heller fut divulguée.
La liberté retrouvée, ils n'eurent qu’une obsession : remplir les prisons de leurs confrères, qui étaient également leurs concurrents sur le marché (restreint) du papier. Un nombre assez considérable d’écrivains qui ne l’étaient pas moins furent donc déclarés interdits d’édition par le CNE.
La plupart d’entre eux ne souffrirent guère de l’ostracisme, tant était fabriqué l’opprobre sur lequel on le fondait. Soit qu’ils aient battu leur coulpe et donné des garanties ; soit (le plus souvent) que leur talent et la qualité de leurs travaux les aient mis hors d'atteinte, on n'a pu les étouffer longtemps. Portée par les Poèmes de Fresnes, la voix de Robert Brasillach ne s’est jamais tue. Depuis vingt ans, le disque où Pierre Fresnay les dit connaît le même succès. Céline paraît dans la Pléiade. Mme Desanti, stalinienne de l’époque dorée, raconte Drieu. Gallimard a publié Les deux étendards, le chef-d’œuvre de Lucien Rebatet. Paul Morand est entré à l’Académie. Maurras demeure un des maîtres du siècle. En revanche, Béraud a disparu.
Avait disparu, devrai-je dire, puisque M. Butin lui consacre un livre important et indispensable, et qu'une petite maison d’édition provinciale entreprend de le rééditer. Désormais, Mme Germaine Béraud pourra s'éteindre en paix. Le souhait que son mari lui avait crié dans la salle d’audience, après le verdict, va se trouver exaucé. Il lui avait dit : « Défends ma mémoire, défends mon œuvre. » Voilà qui commence à être fait.
